Launch of the Next Generation Science Website (Phase 2)

Synaxis recently completed a website for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that allows browsers to find and review information about the NGSS as well as review the draft standards themselves (until the end of May). The final standards will be published in 2013.

The launch of the Next Generation site was a much anticipated event by concerned parents as well as by educators themselves. It was featured on www.usatoday.com and was on the front page of USA Today on May 11, 2012.  In preparation for this publicity, Next Generation turned to the experts at Synaxis to design, develop, and host the new site. They also offered advanced servers, reverse proxies, and a content delivery system to handle the large amount of anticipated traffic.

With the United States lagging behind many other industrialized nations in science skills, especially in young children, new standards are being put in place to bring the U.S. up to speed. The Next Generation Science Standards site was recently launched with updated standards which have been formulated by educators and scientists to give kids in elementary school and beyond a head start in learning important science related skills. The site is intended to give an explanation of the new guidelines, as well as provide the community with information regarding why the new standards were necessary.

Science scores amongst eighth graders and high school students across the U.S. have not improved over the past few years, and they have fallen behind other nations consistently for the past decade. The biggest deficits are seen at the elementary level, where the focus isn’t generally aimed at science, but more on reading and math skills. The new standards will provide key milestones and subjects which teachers can focus on in the classroom to provide children with a better benchmark for keeping up with other nations, as well as to help them succeed in higher grade levels.

The site itself is designed to be user friendly, with well laid out navigation and clearly labeled sections. This is thanks to a Drupal 7 design, which also makes searching the site for exact information quick and easy. This allows even not so Internet savvy people to easily get to where they need to go. A clean layout also adds to the convenience, since it’s not cluttered with unnecessary graphics and videos.

Aside from the easy to follow layout, there is a wealth of information found on the Next Generation Science Standard website. An expansive frequently asked questions section combined with sections explaining what the standards are, how they will be used, and why they were developed are also available. These are intended to give readers a strong grasp of the entire development and implementation of the new standards so that they are easy to understand and informative.
